The rain is beating down, there are very few hours of daylight, and I am dreaming of the blossoms of spring and bright lacy confections!
To lift your January blues, I bring you a preview of Handmade in the UK – our upcoming lace collection! Inspired by historic urbanity and pastoral landscapes, knit in lux hand-dyes, this collection is a love-letter to my new home.
Since Handmade in the UK was first conceived the collection has gradually been taking shape, from conceptual design and yarn selection, through to the final details. It have absolutely LOVED working with these beautiful yarns from some of my favourite dyers.
In February, I will tell you a little bit more about the dyers and yarn producers I am working with on this project: Skein Queen, Juno Fibre Arts, Orkney Angora, Shilasdair, The Uncommon Thread, and Old Maiden Aunt.
First, for your viewing pleasure, the amazingly beautiful materials I have been working with:
And a few of the projects featured in Handmade in the UK:
My favourite – a cardigan with an exquisite lace yoke.
Yarn: Skein Queen Voluptuous
Gauge: 20 sts / 4 inches
Construction: The lace yoke band is knit from centre back in two directions. Stitches are picked up from top and bottom edges of band, and knit down to arms and body, and up to neckline. Button bands are worked last.
Next a soft and feminine lace beret, featuring rosebud motif I designed for the Rosebud Shawl.
Yarn: The Uncommon Thread Sumptuous DK
Construction: This lacy beret is knit from brim to crown. The crown decreases are integrated into the structure of the lace motif.
A simple but classy lace stole : Thistle – as a new resident in Scotland, I had to make at least a ‘nod’ to the Scottish flower!
The most luxurious hat and mitten set you will ever knit for yourself (or your very best friend!), Burn is a water-inspired lace pattern, knit in softest cashmere.
Yarn: Skein Queen Opulent cashmere
Construction: The beanie is knit from brim to crown, and mittens are knit from cuffs to fingertips.
Handmade in the UK will be available in April or May 2013 as a print book, an ebook, and each of the patterns will also be available as individual .pdf downloads – the same as the rest of our portfolio – so you can choose the option that suits you best.

I love the soft variations in the wools. They seem to accentuate the patterns beautifully.

This looks fantastic – as a proud (and sometimes homesick) Canadian who has recently moved to the UK, I love the cross-country influences and design aesthetics of Tin Can Knits. Looking forward to this!

They’re all lovely – more added to my ever increasing ‘to do’ list…………….!

that red cardigan! omg. what is the sizing going to be? I’m on your email list and will buy the book as soon as it’s available. thank you for your great work!
January 31, 2013 @ 9:45 am
As is typical with our patterns, the cardigan will be sized from 0-6 months through to a ladies 60″ bust (4XL). There will be other pieces in the collection that won’t size all the way down to baby (because they wouldn’t make sense as baby garments), but it is our goal at Tin Can Knits to create multi-size patterns as much as practical.

Oh — so lovely! I’m so looking forward to these patterns :)

I’m not only envious that you get to live in Scotland, but I’m also loving those sneak peeks! They’re beautiful! I can’t wait ’til the book comes out. Do you need a roommate/test knitter? ;)
January 31, 2013 @ 9:43 am
Haha my boyfriend and I already have a flatmate! But if you are interested in test knitting, we do that via Ravelry. You can check out our ravelry group, and send me PM with your details and I can add you to our list.

What lovely designs and gorgeous photos! :)

Thanks Jen! This book is going to be a bit different, a bit more ‘arty’ than the last one (with same pattern style/clarity though), so I’ll be interested to see what you think!
