{"id":1576,"date":"2013-06-14T10:03:25","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T17:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.tincanknits.com\/?p=1576"},"modified":"2023-06-22T23:13:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T06:13:57","slug":"purl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.tincanknits.com\/?p=1576","title":{"rendered":"How to Purl"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you can begin to purl, you must cast on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are following on from our <a title=\"How to Knit\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.tincanknits.com\/2013\/06\/14\/knit\/\">how to knit tutorial<\/a>, you will have learned the knit stitch first, and knit at least one row, and your work will look something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-01.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purling is the BACKWARD version of knitting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purling is the BACKWARD version of knitting.\u00a0 If that breaks your brain, just forget that I said it <em>(it&#8217;s not important now)<\/em>.\u00a0 You make loops, like when you are knitting, but you insert the needle differently, and hold the yarn in front of the work rather than in the back of the work as you did when you were knitting.<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; and tell us what you&#8217;d like to learn<\/a> &#8211; Alexa and I are here to help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to purl<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch on the left-hand needle, from back to front.\u00a0 (it needs to go in between the front and back &#8216;legs&#8217; of a single stitch, not in between two stitches)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the yarn IN FRONT of the needle, wrap the working yarn around the right-hand needle tip at the front of the work. *you must wrap it around in the direction shown*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the right-hand needle to push this loop of working yarn out the back of the work, creating a new loop (one purl stitch).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To complete the motion, you must allow the old stitch (the one you just purled into) to slide off the end of the left-hand needle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continue to repeat steps 1-4 until all of the stitches have been purled, and thus transferred to the right-hand needle.\u00a0 You should have the same number of stitches on the needles.\u00a0 And when you get to the end of the row, simply turn the work 180 degrees, place the right-hand needle into your left hand, and then begin again to work the next row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-02.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-03.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-04.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-05.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-06.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tincanknits.com\/images\/SC-tut-purl-07.jpg?w=1165\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continue to repeat steps 1-4 until all of the stitches have been purled, and thus transferred to the right-hand needle.\u00a0 You should have the same number of stitches on the needles.\u00a0 And when you get to the end of the row, simply turn the work 180 degrees, place the right-hand needle into your left hand, and then begin again to work the next row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Congratulations &#8211;
