There are many ways to work short rows, but this method is by far my favourite! I find the stitches come out more evenly than other methods I’ve tried, creating a more seamless short row. I hope you love it as much as I do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What are short rows?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Short rows are rows that don\u2019t go all the way to the end of the round or row; they stop short. Working a series of these short rows creates a wedge of fabric. There are many uses for this extra wedge of fabric, to create the shaping on the Beloved bonnet, to raise the back neck in a sweater like Flax, or to add a little more fabric to the bum of the Rocky Joggers. There are many methods to create these wedges of fabric and this tutorial covers the method called German Short Rows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    German Short Row (GSR) Terminology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Double the stitch: <\/strong>When working German short rows we use the term ‘double the stitch’. This is because when you bring your yarn around the needle the stitch appears as two strands over the needle, rather than the usual one. You’ll see below what that looks like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The steps for turning your stitches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. (Right side) <\/strong>Work to the stitch specified in your pattern <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Turn the work so the wrong side is facing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. (Wrong side)<\/strong> Slip the stitch from the left needle to the right needle purlwise with yarn in front<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Pull the yarn to the back of the work over top <\/strong>of the right needle. This will distort the stitch, making it look as if there are 2 stitches instead of 1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Bring the yarn to the front between<\/strong> the needles to begin purling, or leave at the back if the next stitch is knit<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Keeping a tighter tension than usual for the first few stitches work to the stitch specified in your pattern <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Turn the work so the right side is facing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    8. (Right side)<\/strong> Bring the yarn to the front between<\/strong> the needles<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    9. Slip the stitch from the left needle to the right needle purlwise with the yarn in front<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    10. Pull the yarn to the back of the work over<\/strong> top of the right needle. This will distort the stitch making it look as if there are 2 stitches instead of 1.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Continue in this fashion as specified in your pattern, creating your ‘wrapped’ or ‘doubled’ stitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sept 3: slip the st from the left needle to the right needle purlwise with yarn in front. You can see that the yarn is in the front of the work. Insert your needle as if you were going to purl, then slip the stitch from the left needle to the right without working it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      Step 4: Pull the yarn to the back of the work OVER TOP of the right needle. This will distort the stitch, making it look as if there are 2 sts instead of 1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      Step 5: Bring the yarn to the front between<\/strong> the needles if your next stitch is a purl. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      This is how you work your short rows, back and forth, creating extra fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Picking up the turned\/doubled stitches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      1. Work to the doubled stitch<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Work the the doubled stitch as if it were one (like a knit 2 together, or purl 2 together, depending on the stitch)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Voila! You have worked German Short Rows!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Substituting German Short Rows for wrap & turn instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        When substituting German short rows for a classic wrap & turn (w&t) you just want to remember that a wrapped stitch in the w&t version is the same as the ‘turned’ or ‘doubled’ stitch in German short rows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        An example:
        Instruction: knit to 3 sts before wrapped st, w&t

        What you want to do for German short rows is to knit to 3 sts before the last turned stitch, work 1 more stitch and turn your work etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
