What is a Provisional Cast On? A provisional cast-on is a blanket term for any sort of cast-on which leaves live stitches, which can later be knit from in the opposite direction.
The pinhole cast-on is an elegant way to start a piece of knitting from the centre. It is used to begin circular and square shawls, blankets, top-down hats, and other similar items.
Many triangular shawls – including our own designs – begin at the center back, with a small number of stitches, and then grow in ever-lengthening rows, which form 2 triangles, separated by a center stitch.
