As if launching a Pacific Knits in September wasn’t enough, while Alexa and I were together in Vancouver we decided to whip up a holiday collection, just in time for last-minute gift knitting! The designs were ambitious, the schedule unreasonable, but we’ve managed to pull it together, and Great White North is now ready for your enjoyment!
In Vancouver and in Edinburgh, a beautiful late summer gave way to fall, and now fall is turning to winter as the days get shorter and darker, and temperatures drop. We haven’t had much snow yet either side of the Atlantic, but with plenty of new mittens, hats and scarves, we are ready for the winter weather!
After cold and rainy days outside, Alexa and I like to cuddle up with hot drinks and make beautiful knits for our beloved friends and family. Great White North is our vision of the holiday season, knit in subtle shades of grey, white and festive red. It features plenty of quick gift projects; hats, mittens, scarves and cowls. There are 2 ornament patterns; adorable tiny socks, and funny fancy balls to hang on the tree. Snowflake is a girly ‘Christmas party sweater’ perfect for pretty little girls like Hunter, and beautiful women like Emily. And for something utterly luxurious and snuggly, there is Drift, a cabled shawl / baby blanket.
GREAT WHITE NORTH Patterns:
Following Tin Can Knits standards, all the patterns in Great White North are sized from baby to grandpa; so you can make matching hats, scarves, and cowls, and mittens for the entire family. We have included some very simple patterns that would be perfect for new knitters, as well as more complex and challenging knits like snowflake and drift.
First things first – FANCY BALLS – a fun free pattern!
These lovely baubles are fun to knit, adorable, and make perfect little gifts or present toppers!
The Tall Dark and Handsome pattern includes a simple textured hat, scarf, and cowl, each sized from baby or child up to large adult. Knit in worsted or aran weight it’s quick and easy! We think Hunter looks so sweet in her little red toddler cowl, although she doesn’t seem terribly pleased about it.
For chilly hands from Little to Large, there are Bon Bon Mittens. The pattern includes tiny baby mitts, then sizes from toddler through to adult large.
Bon Bons knit up quite quickly in an aran or worsted weight yarn, with cables that remind us of sweet twisted candies! Hands up if you like warm cabled mittens… anybody?…
If you like Bon Bons, along with the mittens we have designed a family of hats. The Bon Bon Toque is sized from baby to adult large, in two styles; manly (just the cables), and lady (cables and lace).
Lastly we have two larger projects – ambitious gifts or special projects made just for you! The Snowflake sweater is a perfectly elegant sweater to wear to the in-laws Christmas dinner, or to for dressing up your little cutie-pie in preparation for sugar-crazed races around the living room. Here at Tin Can Knits we LOVE to dress babies and kids in tiny versions of adult clothing, and we think Snowflake has a great balance of elegant and adorable.
Last, but by no means least is Drift, an opulent cabled shawl, or very special baby blanket. Knit in a sumptuous worsted-weight merino / alpaca blend, the finished piece has an exquisite weightiness and drape.
We have done our best to bring you beautiful holiday knitting, and now Alexa and I are looking forward to a tiny break over the holidays before the Spring collection comes around! So do like we plan to do: snuggle up next to the fire, make a mug of cocoa with too many marshmallows, and relax with this collection of classic wintery knits!
