I am absolutely loving some bread and butter knitting!
With a tiny new baby, there’s only a bit of time for knitting. When the majority of your time is spent feeding, fussing and bum-wiping, grab yarn that you love and choose a simple project that will grow quickly for maximum relaxation and knitting satisfaction. On those days when it feels near impossible to get that baby to stop crying and sleep, adding a couple rows of buttery soft squishy garter stitch to a blanket can lift your spirits and return your feeling of accomplishment!
For my bread and butter, I chose Bonfire, a super-bulky blanket which combines garter stitch goodness with a single luscious cable to keep things interesting. I’m about a quarter of the way through, and loving the way the fabric knits up.

Since Alexa designed the Bonfire Blanket, I’ve been itching to make one, both for the joy of the process, and to add a gorgeous and cozy blanket to my home! Never one to knit something EXACTLY like the original, I decided I wanted something a little grander so I went with Wool and the Gang Crazy Sexy Wool in ‘magic mint’. Who wouldn’t love such a bright and beautiful blanket to welcome them home?

I’m not sure yet how many repeats of the 20-row chart I will be able to do with my 20 balls, but all the details will be posted on our Ravelry project page here when I’m done. Watch the blog, because once I’ve finished there’ll be a chance to win some luscious yarn of your own from Wool and the Gang!
What’s your bread and butter?
Socks, hats or baby sweaters, most knitters have a basic project that they come back to again and again for the comfort and pleasure of the simple knit. What’s your bread and butter?

oh my gosh, that blanket looks so amazingly soft and cozy, and i adore the photo with the tiny baby feet poking out! My bread and butter knitting is stockinette, or any type of cowl.

A roll-brim hat, plain or with colorwork, for a baby or a child is my go-to knitting when I need to feel creative and see quick progress. I really like Bonfire, the magic mint color is dreamy, and the baby — capital A for Adorable!

I like to use up yarn odds and ends in simple striped hats, which I then give to kids or donate (I teach middle school). The hat patterns I use are simple, the knitting is quick, and deciding how to combine the yarns is enough creativity to keep it interesting.

I’ve started knitting plain vanilla socks as a relief from complex knitting and an easy portable project during stressful moments. We are moving back from Canada to France after more than a decade, a stressful moment if there is one. While the movers were packing all our belongings yesterday, I reached out for my sock and knit a few rows to unwind.

When I was pregnant I couldn’t bring myself to knit at all until almost the end of the second trimester. The first pregnancy I was trying to knit a fingering weight wedding parasol and an heirloom baby blanket, both of which were definitely NOT my bread and butter at the time. But once I hit the third trimester I was knitting like a fiend, and continued while my babies napped on my chest after they each arrived. It was mostly baby sweaters in the round in stockinette. A very tight gauge to keep them both warm, since they were born in the in-between seasons. So much time where you can’t do much else after they arrive!

My ‘bread & butter’ knitting is scarves, which I then donate to a local homeless shelter in the fall, because it’s cold up here in Northern Ontario!
