Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how brief childhood is (you’ve probably noticed this if you’ve been following along on Instagram or the blog here). As I watch my children grow I am keenly aware that the day they strike out on their own is rapidly approaching. I know, this is a bit of an unnecessarily weighty thought, but it has stuck with me. I’m not sure if the pandemic has made this idea loom larger than necessary, or if this is just a natural part of parenthood. Whatever the reason for these feelings of the brevity of life, I decided this summer to take my kids on a road trip. A long one. I wanted them to adventure in the great outdoors with me and to visit family and friends we have along the way. The kids are 11, 9, and 8, and I’m never sure how much longer they will want to spend that kind of time with me.
We packed up for a month on the road and away we went. We hiked, camped, swam, visited museums, visited friends, drove over the prairies, knit, took pictures, read books, argued over music, drew pictures, and had an all around great time. This is our epic journey in pictures.
The Great Outdoors
We camped and stayed with friends along the way, visiting Revelstoke, Lake Louise, Drumheller, Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, and Jasper. We hiked the mountains, enjoyed the prairies, and admired the lakes and land formations along the way.

Fun with friends and family
It was a great time adventuring with all the cousins! We met cousin Izzy for the first time, hung out at Anna’s farm (The Long Way Homestead), hit the beach with our buds, and visited the Calgary cousins too. I grew up with lots of cousins and it has been great helping my kids to get to know their family near and far.

Knitting too…
Of course there was a little knitting and maybe a photoshoot or 2 for our next book as well!

You are so right about how quickly they grow and are gone. Suddenly my youngest is 28, and none of my 3 have lived with us for years. Today is my older granddaughter’s 4th birthday and I’m wondering how she got so old! Enjoy every minute… And the knitting is gorgeous!

I know just what you mean! I feel like we don’t have long left to adventure all together as a family and, like you, I want to make those memories. Looks like you hit some of the coolest spots, love the hoodoo pictures!

August 11, 2022 @ 12:52 pm
We camped mostly, stayed with family, and a couple of hotel stops.
