On the third day of Christmas, Tin Can Knits gave to me…
honey flavoured mitts,
sea inspired socks,
and cabled mittens for under the tree!
cables are my favourite
I was once in the middle of an interview with the lovely ladies at Pom Pom Quarterly when it was pointed out to me how much I love cables. I thought to myself, “Oh no, I love all kinds of knitting! Lace, texture, and sure, cables…”, but it’s true: cables are my very favourite things to knit.
One of the cables I quite enjoy (when I’m not obsessively knitting Antler cables) is this lovely round cable. It reminds me of honeycombs, an item in nature that is both useful and beautiful.
This year Emily and I have been taking a new look at some of our old favourites and Honeycomb was on my list. I loved the cable, but didn’t like the mitts without a proper thumb, and it needed to be redesigned for all sizes of course. So, we bring you the new and improved Honeycomb mitts.
Honeycomb Mitts Project Details
pattern: Honeycomb

yarn: 50 (60, 80, 100, 140) yards worsted / aran weight yarn
(samples shown in Tanis Fiber Arts Green Label Aran in ‘chris grey’ and ‘truffle’)
needles: US #5 / 3.75mm and US #7 / 4.5mm (or as required
to meet gauge) DPNs in both sizes (or long circulars for magic loop)
gauge: 20 sts & 28 rounds / 4” in stockinette on larger needles
What’s in a yarn?
I picked up this skein of Tanis Fiber Arts Green Label Aran in Truffle without really knowing what it was to become. It was almost impossible to tell from the skein how absolutely fabulous this colour would knit up! I mean, I guessed it was going to be great, it is beautiful TFA after all and I would trust Tanis with all of my colour choices. It came out even better than I imagined. The hints of burgundy and green give the mitts depth of colour without detracting from the lovely cable. A perfect match!
So go forth and pick up this pattern and find that perfect skein!
