I grew up near the Pacific in a dark, wet forest, ferny and lush, that ate up the light. In autumn and winter, gales broke upon the forested shore. Big winds blew the tops right off the lumpy, slate-coloured waves and set the crowns of giant fir trees creaking and swaying.

I remember how much my mum loved getting out into the storm. We’d step out of the house into the inky blackness, excited to experience such powerful weather. I’d be wrapped in a plastic coat with scratchy woollens underneath, holding on tight to her hand, so I wouldn’t blow away.
She showed me a deep love for the wild, the weather, and the elements. Decades later, and continents distant, I still have that same yearning to be out in nature, dazzled by its power, to drink in the immense beauty of the storm.

The human body is so soft and fragile by comparison to the shoreline’s rounded stones, the driftwood stumps bleached by sun, wind, and time. Often, to be in nature, we need to wrap up.
I love the way knits enfold me, protect and insulate me. Wrapped in wool, my loved ones and I can feel those moments of wonder, listen to the lashing wind and crashing waves. And when we trek homeward, sodden and chilled but full of quiet delight, there’ll be a soft couch with a cozy hand-knit blanket waiting for us.

Knits to enfold you when we venture out
Several of the designs from our Lazy Sunday cable collection come to mind, when I remember my childhood storm-stalking. First, the Homeward cardigan, with its fun-to-knit combination of cables, bobbles, and OH MY that garter stitch goodness!

I also love the Hush sweater for it’s soft, organic cable pattern. This motif was inspired by spending time out in nature, appreciating the patterns I found, beautifully carved by water, wind, and the growing things that reach and surge from the ground.

Lastly, the Snowglobe hat features cables that speak of the soft roundness of heavy snow, mounded on pine boughs. It’s perfectly cozy for heading out into cold and beautiful wild weather.

I remember holding my mom’s hand and walking against the wind fearing I’d be blown away. It was over 60 years ago but I can recall it as if it happened yesterday!
